JM: Monthly Family Newsletter April 2025
JM: Phoenix Principal Monthly Message 4.23, 2025
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back from Spring Break! In spring, we usually see students need more support for social awareness as they are very close to their classmate and still learning how to show their friendship. Please show this video to your child and talk about how to show kindness in general. Being kind: Why Be Kind?
We also would like to have your supports to talk about social management skills with your child at home. 💗 Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Spotlight Social Management is a person’s ability to make safe and constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions. Watch this short video with your child to help them understand this concept, and see if they can try it next week.
This month, we started to use a special phoenix ticket to encourage students to practice the Big Three behavior expectation. We will continue to use special and the regular Phoenix Tickets and positive reinforcements to support our students' growth and spotlight their efforts and progress vs. achievement. We hope you can continue to celebrate their amazing progress at home but not just the outcome/achievement and provide positive reinforcement as well.
Thank you for reading our newsletter. Sincerely, Ms. Tan and Ms. Hu |
Hu |

We appreciate the opportunity to work together with you to create well-balanced classrooms. Please fill this out by 5/16/2025 Thank you. Survey: Microsoft Forms |

Fire Drills
In april, we had our Fire Drill. Washington state law and Bellevue School District policy require all schools to hold at least one drill per calendar month while school is in session. This month, we will be conducting a fire drill and practicing evacuating the building and accounting for everyone.
Please talk with your student about preparing for emergencies and disasters such as fires. Encourage them to talk about their concerns and express their feelings. Emphasize that even though sometimes things happen that we may not expect, there are lots of things we can do to help us stay safe. For more information on fire safety, you might want to visit the National Fire Protection Association "Kids" page at http://www.sparky.org/ or their parent resource page at http://www.sparky.org/parents. |
Lock-down Drill
In May, we will be conducting a lockdown drill and practicing actions to help keep us safe in the event of a threat or intruder.
During a lockdown drill, students learn about the importance of listening to school staff and following instructions quickly and quietly.
Lockdown is initiated when there is a threat to the campus or school. All threats are taken seriously. In the interest of student safety, a lockdown may be initiated while the nature of the threat is evaluated. Staff are trained to lock classroom doors, shut off the lights, close the blinds, and to continually assess the situation.
Please talk with your student about preparing for emergencies and disasters. Encourage them to talk about their concerns and express their feelings. Emphasize that even though sometimes things happen that we may not expect, there are lots of things we can do to help us stay safe.
For more information on talking to your child about school safety, you might want to visit the website https://www.mhanational.org/talking-kids-about-school-safety.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

Student Attendance FAMILY VACATIONS should be planned for non-school days. Click here for the 2024-25 calendar. If there is a special reason for an absence on a school day (e.g. family trip), please print or pick up and complete a Request for Excused Absence form from the main office at least one week prior to the absence and return to the office. Your student's teacher will review your situation and determine whether the absence will adversely affect learning. Based on this information, the principal or assistant principal will determine whether the absence will be excused or unexcused. Prearranged absences due to vacation for more than five days in a school year will not be approved. Failure to follow procedure will result in an unexcused absence. Students may be approved for five prearranged absences per school year. UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: State law requires that we follow specific steps for unexcused student absences, including parent conferencing. Students who have ten unexcused absences fall under the BECCA law and must be referred to the courts.
Please read more about our attendance policy on Jing Mei's website. |

Safety Update for Bellevue Students and Families
Many in our communities have heard about a recent incident where a 16-year-old girl was accosted by a stranger as she exited a Metro bus in the Lake Hills area. The incident provides us the opportunity to share a few safety tips that are important to keep in mind. The Bellevue Police Department reminds us that if anyone feels like they are being followed or are in the process of being attacked, there are actions they can take:
For more information about safety in our schools, visit the Safety and Security department pages. Safety concerns can also be reported through the district website. Everyone is reminded to call 911 if you are in immediate danger or in the case of a life-threatening emergency.
