Superintendent’s Blog: Honoring Bellevue’s Diversity and Preserving Civil Rights in Our Beloved Community

Superintendent Aramaki shares a message with the BSD community acknowledging recent celebrations and commemorations in our community, including Lunar New Year, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Black History Month, and Ramadan. He goes on to share that amidst the celebrations, there have also been many in our community who have experienced fear and uncertainty. In response to the executive orders coming from the federal government, many students, families, and staff — particularly our immigrant community, our LGBTQIA+ community, our families with children with IEPs and 504s, and our communities of color — have worried about their education, safety, and belonging.

As a district, we are doing our best to navigate the flurry of K-12 education-related executive orders and communications from the US Department of Education. In his most recent video communication (listen in English, Spanish, Chinese and Russian), Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal, addresses how the state’s school districts, including the Bellevue School District, are to respond to the executive orders. Dr. Aramaki encourages students, staff, and families to watch his video to get a better understanding of the implications of the recent executive orders. A few of the key points from Superintendent Reykdal that apply to the Bellevue School District are:

 · The Civil Rights of Undocumented Youth (Procedure 4310.1P)

 · The Civil Rights of LGBTQIA+ Youth (Policy 3211 and Procedure 3211P)

 · Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (Policy 0130 and Procedure 0130P)

· Focus on Funding Public Education

Dr. Aramaki goes on to share a personal story of how his family was impacted by Executive Order 9066, which in 1942 authorized the forced relocation of Japanese Americans along the west coast to internment camps. He expresses that even during this dark time in history, there was still hope. And in this instance, it was attributed, in part, to the courage and care of a former teacher in Bellevue’s beloved community. Read the full Superintendent blog for more of this story and to learn about the recent federal actions and guidance from the state.

Supporting Student Health and Attendance this Spring

We love having your children at school all year!

As we move into March and the arrival of spring, students’ schedules often fill up with school events, testing, and extracurricular activities. This season can feel exciting and overwhelming with AP exams, standardized tests, spring sports, concerts, prom, and graduation preparations.

As schedules get busier, attendance can sometimes slip. Even excused absences can disrupt routines that keep students engaged and connected to learning. Additionally, spring is still cold, and the flu season can impact student health and attendance.

Health Habits for Success

Here are some ways to support your child in staying healthy, present, and prepared this spring:

1. Get vaccinated: Spring is a great time to make sure your student is up to date on all required and recommended immunizations. Contact your medical provider or sign up for MYIR to track your student’s immunization records.

2. Wash your hands frequently and cover coughs and sneezes: Use soap and water and wash for at least 20 seconds, and use a tissue or the inside of the elbow to reduce the spread of germs.

3. Stay Home When Sick: Review Bellevue School District's Too Sick for School Guidance to determine when your student should stay home.

4. Manage Seasonal Allergies: Spring allergies can impact focus and well-being. Help reduce symptoms by:

a. Taking allergy medications as recommended by a healthcare provider

b. Using an air purifier at home to reduce allergens

c. Keeping windows closed during high pollen days.

d. Showering and changing clothes after spending time outside to remove pollen.

5. Prioritize sleep. Getting enough sleep is crucial for promoting brain function, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. Lack of sleep can affect academic performance and mental health. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends following sleep guidance.

a. Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10-13 hours (including naps)

b. School-age children (6-12 years): 9-12 hours

c. Teenager (13-18 years): 8-10 hours

d. To Promote Healthy Sleep Habits

i. Avoid screens (TV, tablets, and phones) at least 1 hour before bedtime to prevent blue light disruption

ii. Avoid caffeine and heavy meals before bedtime, especially for teens

6. Manage Stress, which is crucial for students’ well-being.

a. Practice deep breathing exercises (e.g., inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds)

b. Make time for hobbies and fun activities

c. Connect with friends and family

d. If you or someone you know needs help with mental health, Care Solace will quickly and confidently find available providers matched to your needs:

i. Call 888-515-0595 (available 24/7/365) ii. Visit caresolace.com/bsd405 and search your own or click “Book Appointment” for assistance by video chat, email, or phone.

7. Fuel your body

a. Stay hydrated: Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day

b. Eat a balanced diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible. If your family struggles to access food, please see these local resources.

Thank you for your partnership in helping our students stay healthy and engaged in learning this spring!

Drills in March and April (School communication to Prek to 5th Gr.)

In March we conducted an earthquake drill and practiced what we would do if we were at school in the event of an earthquake. Students learned about Drop, Cover, and Hold On and then we practiced.

drop cover hold on graphic

Please talk to your child about our drill today. An important next step might be planning a drill in your own home and checking to make sure you are prepared in the event of an earthquake or other natural disaster.

For more information on earthquakes and general preparedness, you might want to visit the Washington Emergency Management Division (https://mil.wa.gov/personal) or Great Washington ShakeOut (https://www.shakeout.org/washington/index.html) websites.

In April, we will be conducting a fire drill and practicing evacuating the building and accounting for everyone.

During a fire evacuation, students are taught to quickly and quietly exit the building. They meet on the field at an assigned location and stay silent while attendance is taken to ensure all people have safely evacuated.

Please talk with your student about preparing for emergencies and disasters such as fires. Encourage them to talk about their concerns and express their feelings. Emphasize that even though sometimes things happen that we may not expect, there are lots of things we can do to help us stay safe.

For more information on fire safety, you might want to visit the National Fire Protection Association "Kids" page at http://www.sparky.org/ or their parent resource page at http://www.sparky.org/parents.

drop cover hold on graphic
