JM: Monthly Family Newsletter October 2024 景美家长月报 2024年10月

Dear Phoenix Families,

Last month, the school year started with much excitement as we welcomed many new students in different grades and our Kindergarten students in the building, as well as the previous students in the new grade levels.

They have quickly learned the class and school routines. Some students are forming new friendship others are slower to make connections.  We will monitor friendships at school but we encourage you to talk to your child at home often and share with us any information that could help us better support their social emotional needs.

We are now doing our Fall assessments.  This will help us understand our students' proficiency levels in English, Math, and Mandarin so that we can adjust our instruction.  Please do not worry about summer regression and give us time to work with the students to regain skills and reignite their motivation to learn.

Finally, we are very grateful for your understanding and support of our various procedures such as recess before lunch, memorizing the lunch passcode/student ID, arrival, and dismissal.  

Thank you for using drive-through lane (the lane closer to the school) as drive-through not doing loading or unloading your child to keep the lane goes faster. If your child is not able to unbuckle/buckle up and get off/get on the car and close the door independently, we will recommend you park and walk your child to school.

As we get used to these routines you will see that our plan helps us stay safe and healthy throughout the day.

Fall Family Teacher Conference Pre K-5

Across BSD, schools will have early release days for K-5 teachers to engage in conferences with families.

As you probably have seen on the district calendar and in the important upcoming dates email I sent to families, the union bargained several early release days for teachers to engage in conferences with families.

The dates are Monday Nov. 25, Tuesday Nov. 26, and Wednesday Dec. 4th. On those days we will be releasing students at 1:10 (not a change for Wednesday Nov. 19th of course because it is a Wednesday).  Please mark your calendar for half day pick-up. You teacher might schedule meetings outside of those three days, you will receive more information or meeting invitations soon from your students' teachers.

Dyslexia Awareness Family Event

Join the Newport Heights Elementary PTSA as they host a family event to raise awareness about dyslexia.

Date: October 23, 2024

Time: 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Location: Newport Heights Elementary School library

All BSD community members are welcome to join and learn:

Drill Information

Earthquake Drill

International ShakeOut Day was on October 17 wen we had an earthquake drill.  This is a day when we engage in best practices and safety habits should an earthquake occur during the school day. 

During the earthquake drill, we tell the students to do the following:

Stop doing what you are doing

Drop to the ground

Cover and get under table to protect yourself

Hold on tightly until shaking stops

Stop, Drop, and Hold

On November 15, we will do Shelter in Place drill and practicing what to do in the event of a hazardous materials release near our school.

During a shelter-in-place drill, students sit quietly while staff simulate sealing the room to limit outside air exchange. We will also practice quickly moving from lower levels of the building to upper level in buddy classes.

Shelter-in-place procedures would only be used if officials determine there is not enough time to safely evacuate people out of the danger zone.

Fall Panorama Survey 

Bellevue School District is launching the Fall 2024 Panorama Student Survey to gather valuable insights into students' experiences and to further support their growth and well-being. The survey will focus on several key areas, including school climate, sense of belonging, and social-emotional learning (SEL), offering students an opportunity to share their perspectives.
